Beacon Hill

What started out as an architect, and the people of Beacon Hill butting heads, ended in great compromise. An old sagging building, known as the former Beacon Hill Elementry building built in 1915, was set to be torn down. An architect with a soft spot for history wanted to have this site designated a historic landmark. The people of Beacon Hill wanted it torn down.
Falling debris made this ghostly building a hazard to the children of the current Beacon Hill Elementary. This building needed to either be restored or removed. The school district was is already struggling financially and lacks the resources.
From these problems, the Beacon Hill Agreement was born. The architect proposed "to link a demolition permit with heritage preservation curriculum at the district, as well as visual documentation of the building and a corresponding historical inventory. Such an agreement would allow the district and surrounding community to move forward while also deepening historic appreciation and understanding."(Express-News Editorial Board)
The Express-News Editorial Board from San Antonio Express News expresses their support for this agreement in the article "Approve Beacon Hill Agreement" Although this is an interesting piece about a historic building, the authors failed to express the reasons for their support of this agreement. The only time they mention their opinion of this agreement is in the title, and when they say, "Council should approve the measure."  I would have liked to hear their thoughts on how this will affect the community. Why go with the deal instead of just tearing the building down? Why not try to raise money to restore the building? I wish there was more meat to this article.
